keys to the kingdom

Medieval-KeyIf everything goes according to plan, this time next week we will have the keys to our new house!

We're peeing our pants with excitement!!! ... But we're pooing our pants a bit too.

Fear of a mortgage, fear of being entirely responsible for something so costly, fear of what we've gotten ourselves into in terms of how much work we will have to do to it. (That'd be, ah... LOTS!).

We looked at it last week and discovered lots of things we didn't notice before. Ceiling fans, for example! The spot for the dishwasher has no plumbing or electricity, and is therefore nothing but a kitchen cave. Aaaand plenty more things too... But there is a toilet! I double checked. (A friend of mine bought and moved into their house before they even realised there was no toilet!) ;)

The house is butt-ugly actually, but we'd hoped to be able to beautify it. Turns out we'll need to spend the "beautification" money on fixing things instead. Things you can't even see! Arhh, that's going to be so so hard.

Nevertheless, regardless of the fact we will be surviving entirely on sausage sandwiches from Bunnings for the next 10 years, I'm getting pret-ty, very, lotsly excited! A week! A week! :D

Eek! I'm so excited for you. Matt and I probably won't be home owners until we are 80, HA!

We built a house and there were things we didn't notice until months after we moved in. There are still lots of projects to be done. Beautification hasn't progressed much. Owning a home is hard work and there are always unexpected challenges. To me, though, having a place to call my own, to do with what I please, is worth all the challenges. And as far as the huge mortgage debt hanging over you...just think of it this way: the money you would be paying for rent gives you a place to live, but the money you pay toward a mortgage gets you closer to owning a place to live...and eventually gets you an asset. I think you'll enjoy it, despite the difficulties and I'm so excited for you both!

Oh it's going to be fantastic...even if you end up fixing it up a bit and then reselling...it's a great investment...hell otherwise you'd just spend your money on useless things...no no don't go thinking about those 'things'...sure food and travel sound lovely but a 'home'...well...there's no comparison...and yes thank god there's a toilet with all that weeing and pooing going on...

It is so exciting. A kitchen cave could turn out to be a magical place, no?

Let me just explain so i don't look like a complete goose! there WAS a toilet but it was outside and she has made it look like a long drop only it wasn't one...) we didn't actually open the toilet lid to check for a hole!

It Is Worth It. It is difficult, expensive, and time consuming, but It Is SO Worth It. You guys will make an amazing home together.

because you will have so much FUN!! You get to decide what colour to make things (terracotta? or moroccan blue?) where to put things (do we really need that wall?) and how you want things (floorboards, yes, daggy old carpet, no.)

even though you will curse it while you're 'beautifying', (and for some time after perhaps) you will turn around after it's done and you will loooove it like you never knew you could love wood and plasterboard.

enjoy!!! can't wait to see pics!! :)

Lucky those Bunnings sangas are quite good. Sometimes they even have chicken ones.
