Saturday, February 28, 2009Friday, February 27, 2009clear the air
Now, after that hostile rant, I need something to clear the air of all the bad vibes, and make this space a nice place to be again.
Something lovely, creative, unique, colourful, cheerful, and inspiring... This should do the trick! ![]() "Bloom" By Sam Spencer (via Appartment Therapy) Gorgeous! I WANT one :D Yay, happy happy joy joy. my neighbour across the road is horrible
One of the great things about having a blog is the power to publicly "out" people. When I say "out" them, I don't mean dragging people kicking and screaming out of the closet. No No, I just mean general things, like the time I snuck a photo of the man who was cutting his fingernails on the train (letting them ping all around the place, people ducking for cover), and then posted the photo here, to secretly embarrass him for his disgusting habit. Gross!
It's a great threat too. If Mr You should tease me about something, I have the brilliant comeback of threatening "I'm going to put that on my blog and then the whole world will know". :D That works well :) hehehehe But today, I am so so sick of the nasty man across the road, it's now his turn. Horrible Nasty Man, This is Your Life! (See the use of bold there? That's to embarrass him even more. Oh watch out, I have weapons people... a blog and the ability to embolden. Duck and cover). Here begins my cranky rant... So Nasty Man (who I like to call Dickwad), is probably in his mid thirties. God knows how, but Nasty Man has a wife, a daughter who is about 8, and a baby who is less than 12 months. Often I have to put up with a whole day of him revving his car as he attempts to "fix it" himself. And clearly he's no mechanic. This is annoying, but, you know, fair enough I guess. Maybe he can't afford to take it in to be fixed. But it's his nastiness that gets my blood boiling. His daughter seems to want to bond with him badly. When he rides off on his bike she follows on hers. When he mows the lawn, she follows with the rake, when he washes the car, she's right at his side. Only 2 days ago when they were washing the car together this is what I hear him YELL at her; "Are you deaf, blind or stupid? It must be one, which is it? It says SOAP right there. See it?! So which one is it? Just STUPID?" Call me crazy, but a simple "There it is" would have sufficed in that instance. This type of thing happens often. Now, I'm not at all nosey, I'm not hiding in the bushes to get this info, all of this is yelled loud enough for me to hear inside my house, while I'm playing music. My newest pastime is coming up with comebacks, and trying to telepathically beam them into her little head to yell back at him. "I'd be much prouder being deaf, blind AND stupid, as opposed to nasty, aggressive and abusive!" Then just now, this is what I heard him yell very loudly at his wife; "You're a fucking slag and that's all there is to it. Do you know what a slag is?" He likes the questions, you see. It makes him feel intelligent I think. Oh Joy! There he goes again, more yelling. More swearing, more questions... He's so nasty. Now, I know he's probably like this because that's how he was treated as a kid. But I really have a hard time with people that don't even attempt to break the pattern. I've tried being understanding, but I'm just so sick of all his nasty vibes. And in oh, about 20 mins, he will speed off his him dumb car, and his wife will blast her Evenescence CD unbelievably loudly across the nighbourhood for the rest of the day in an attempt to hide and heal. I hate Evanescence, and it's all his fault. Nasty man, you should be ashamed of yourself. You need help. Go get some, and leave the rest of us in peace. Dickwad! (And this, ladies and gents is why I could never be a social worker. Praise you angels. I don't know how you stop yourselves from wanting to slap people.) ...end rant. Wednesday, February 25, 2009weddingy wednesday 1
Since the answer to my questions (about whether it's okay for me to start talking weddings already) was a resounding "yes", today will mark the start of weddingy wednesdays.
Now, upfront, I make no promises about how long I can sustain these for, or how frequent they'll be. But I'll get the ball rolling, and we'll see... :) So, as it stand there's really not very much to tell you about our upcoming wedding plans at all yet. What I can tell you is that we are aiming for a date in October (that's middle of Spring in these parts), we are hoping for an outdoorsy garden type of affair where the ceremony and reception can both be help at the same location, and Mr You is insisting on a conga line at some stage throughout the proceedings. (Which I've told him can't be too hard, all you have to do is grab onto someone who walks past). The past few weeks have been occupied with finding possible locations; researching, calling, and visiting... I think that's the first step, finding and booking a venue. All the rest can follow after that. We've looked at 6 places so far; 2 were yucky, 3 were nice, and the other 1 was beautiful... ![]() Each have their pro's and cons. We're still searching. In the meantime, I discovered this place on the net, Coorabella Guesthouse, in the hinterlands of Byron Bay. It's no longer open for accommodation, but you can hire the house and grounds out for events. The man I was emailing was so nice, but sadly the price range is in the "celebrity realm", way above what we can afford. But I keep looking at the pictures, because of how beautiful it looks. I told the nice man that we'd come have a party there once I win the Archibald Prize (scoff scoff)... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm not disappointed. After all it's nice having somewhere to dream about visiting in someday your future; the Disneyland of adult life, so to speak.... only with loads more style and good taste. Sunday, February 22, 2009love birds![]() (This week's theme by Cindy) A little while ago some friends asked me to paint a picture for their wedding invitations. ![]() The brief was to have a pair of swallows (because they mate for life), in an art nouveau style. The finished result of the invitations were to look like French vintage postcards. I designed them too; I toned back the colours of the illustration, making them a touch more sepia, and had them printed on cream card stock. The back of the postcard holds all the details of the wedding. I'd love to show photo's of the finished invitations, but since my computer lost power earlier in the day, I haven't been able to retrieve any of my photo's... gulp. Anyway, my friends really loved the illustration, which, as always was a great relief. We get to go to their lovely wedding in April, and I can't wait. P.S. Speaking of weddings... How far in advance is it reasonable for me to start talking about our wedding stuff, without me seaming like a complete noodle? Friday, February 20, 2009emerald arts store
Guess what?! Emma from Emerald Arts now has her very own gallery shop! A real one, with walls and a roof! How WAY cool is that?
![]() Her city council allowed artists to apply for vacant shops in the centre of town, and she got one! I think she's allowed to stay there, rent free until, someone wants to lease the space. So she has opened Emerald Arts. It's a shop / gallery / workshop venue, and she's filling it with some lovely things, both of her own, and from others. She asked if I would like to have some of my stuff in her shop, so I made cards, bookmarks and gift tags. ![]() Then she posted photo's of how she displayed them all. Tags and bookmarks pegged along lines on the wall. Gift tags in a golden bowl, and cards in the front window! It all looks positively smashing if you ask me! ![]() Thanks so much Emmeline, I can't wait to come and visit the store one day! Please send a hug to Nicole and her family, who have been personally affected by the terrible bushfires. ♥
Tuesday, February 17, 2009ink pink you stink
Not you! Silly :) No no, I like YOU. Yes very much. In fact I'm sure you smell quite blossomy...
No, the stinker is the pooface that tried to corrupt our most beloved Etsy. Ripping off pictures from other peoples stores, and using them to create fake listings of their own. SCAMMER SCUM! Details here. So peeps, keep your eyes peeled, check feedback before purchasing, and report anything dodgy! But don't let it put you off Etsy. Lets keep our support, and remain vigilant. Monday, February 16, 2009Friday, February 13, 2009i like you, do you like me?
Wednesday Morning I woke bright and early ready for the day ahead only to discover a big zit on my chin. Of course! It was bound to happen! It was the day of my blind date.
Some of you may recall this post a while back when I admitted to resorting to doing locality searches online to try and track down possible new friends. Well it just so happens that the first time the very talented Cath (who only lives an hour away from me) discovered me was via that post. She proceeded to stalk me online, leaving a comment here or there, sussing me out as she went. Then we started emailing each other, and I had my turn at stalking her a little bit in return. Eventually, when we realised we had a mutual friend (and therefore had a third party to vouch that neither of us were psycho’s) we started to plan to meet up. Wednesday was the day; the day our internet dating turned to a blind date. To be precise it was in fact a double date. Cath was bringing a friend of hers (Miss E), and I was bringing our mutual friend (Miss K). I left home, driving to Miss K’s place where we were both going to jump in her car and drive to the nearby town to our date. Only I (despite Mr You’s many attempts at teaching me to “just be cool”) for some unbeknown reason left my house 40 mins too early! Therefore arriving too early, so I detoured via an Op Shop for a bit of a poke around to use up the extra time. The rest, thankfully, went according to plan. We sat on the veranda of a lovely café, munching on yummy tart and salad, chatting about art, craft, weddings, babies… you get the idea. It was brilliantly girly, and we laughed alot. Cath, Miss E and Miss K (who are incidentally all actually Mrs’s) each have a daughter aged within 6 months of each other, so they were able to talk about their babies, share stories and tips. I did my very best not to divulge my mortal fear of lactating… I’m pretty sure I managed to keep my face from grimacing during the breastfeeding conversations. I also did my best to not compare my fur-baby-cat to their human babies, despite her recent bout of spewing and missing the toilet (my poor Tilli was sick last week). In the car on the way home Miss K apologised about all the baby talk, but I actually didn’t mind at all. It’s really comforting (especially because I have no family anywhere nearby) to know that when my time comes to become a mother, there’s a community of fantastic Mum’s already around me, that I’ll be able to turn to for advice. We all had so much in common, realising that we’d lived only a suburb apart in Sydney, or we were at the same university together at the same time, or that we’ve had our wares in the same stores. So despite me being a bit shy on the day, it felt SO good to finally meet like-minded, same-aged, fun to be around people. So Cath, and Miss E (I know you’re probably going to read this. Which is actually a bit weird in itself… now is probably a good time to reconsider this blog being completely anonymous) … anyway, thanks so much for taking the time and the chance to meet up for real, and for being so welcoming. Best blind date I ever had! Thursday, February 12, 2009so proud
Whoah! My cards sold before I even saw them listed! Honestly all this fundraising is making me feel so PROUD of everyone. Not just in Australia, but Etsy-ers and craftsters from all over the world have been donating crafts! And after a week of devastating news, tragic stories, and a bombardment of footage and images I know will always scar my mind, it feels so soothing to have something positive and heartwarming to focus on. The myriad of creative ways people are offering help and raising funds is so freakin' amazing, I wish the world was always like this :)
I got an email yesterday filled with a collection of amazing photo's from the fires. Most are terrifying, or devastating, and although they are compelling, I'm only going to show you one... One that encompasses more of the positive and hopeful feelings I'm enjoying today. ![]() We saw this guy on TV today explain the circumstances of how this occurred, during which he told how he was cupping his hand to catch the dribbling water from the bottle, and the koala reached up an rested his burnt claw in the small pool in the man's hand. eeee. The koala was badly burnt, but is now at an animal hospital doing much better. Keep a look out for all the great collections, donations, fund raising, etc. And if you're passing by a Coles supermarket tomorrow, drop in and pick a few things up. All their profits will be going to the appeal. There's also a fantastic post here; first hand ideas on how to help. Tomorrow, I'm going to try and dedicate to catching up on some fire-free news. oz bushfire appeal
To help fundraising efforts for the bushfires (which are still burning) I have donated my bird card set to the Oz Bushfire Appeal etsy store. I've never offered these for sale online before, so if you want to get your mitts on them, and help some people out at the same time, keep your eyes peeled on the Oz Bushfire Appeal shop for when they get listed (should be very soon).
![]() It's a fantastic idea, and there's so many great things on offer in the store. The listings grow and get sold at the most incredible speed! I think I'll head on over and stock up on some birthday present supplies for the year. Check out all the diverse things on offer: ![]() Monday, February 09, 2009to help
Okay team, lets go!
Fast thinking Cindy from Bug & Pop has put together a new blog Handmade Help to co-ordinate craft donations to auction off to raise money to help those left behind with serious injuries, broken hearts, and nothing else. With the aim that all funds raised will go to the Red Cross. I'm still in shock over these fires. The death toll is now up to 173 and still climbing. The personal stories are staggering. You can help in two ways... 1. Go to Handmade Help and follow the steps to list your donated craft item to auction on Ebay or Etsy 2. Go to Handmade Help and have a look at what's on offer to buy. Do some shopping for wonderful handmade items, knowing that the price you pay for them will go back to helping those effected. That way you get something lovely to give a loved one, and also donate at the same time. Sounds perfect! Good work Cindy! the fires
I'm having trouble comprehending the extent of this fire disaster. I'm watching the live reports on TV in tears, listening to the horrible stories of missing husbands, and children that were taken to their grandparents house to be out of harms way... but were not.
(There's a chilling call to a radio station here... thankfully it has a happy ending). I can't believe so many people have lost their lives... it keeps climbing, 24... 38... 84... at last count I heard was 108, expected to rise to somewhere closer to 170! My thoughts go out to everyone effected. I raced around thismorning and checked on all our fellow Victorian bloggers: Kootoyoo, Tinniegirl, Victoria, HoppoBumpo, CurlyPops, Sparkly Green Knickers, One Little Acorn, Leni & Rose, Three Buttons, Hyena in Petticoats, and others, and even those that I think may be in Victoria (but not quite sure). I hope you and your families are all safe and well. Sparkly Green Knickers is donating all her Etsy sales to the appeal. You can donate money and blood donations via the Red Cross. Grandy and Baa is having a clothing make-along for the babies and children. And The Toy Society will be gathering handmade toys to donate. Sunday, February 08, 2009something delicious![]() "Eye Spy something delicious" (This week's theme by Handmaiden) Chocolate brownies. YUM. With nuts. DOUBLE YUM. And a sprinkle of sweet stuff on top. YUMMUM YUM. I spy these... in my dreams! At least I'd like to. But they're certainly not in my house! ![]() They were suppose to be great. They were supposed to tame the wild cake craving I was left having, after Mr You came home from the doctor the other day with medicine that makes him smell like cake. Instead the cupcakes got stuck in the stupid tin, lost all their bottoms, ended up half the height, and now look flat and decidedly un-delicious. The taste? Passable. But certainly not delicious. For that I'm dreaming of brownies. In all their forms... Like the ones HERE. Saturday, February 07, 2009carte postale![]() Chrisy from Sophism Press has included one of my postcards in her lovely Etsy Treasury. Her Treasury list is called 'Carte Postale' and she writes; "Tis always nice to receive something in the mail that isn't a bill... so why not give someone a thrill and do some letter writing with these little treasures." There are some lovely items in her list, including a fantastic bluebird embroidery pattern to embroider your own cards. Go check it out here! Thanks Chrisy. :) Thursday, February 05, 2009eight is more than enough
A little while ago the lovely Brenda tagged me with the "eight is enough" meme. I'm supposed to list eight answers in each category, but quite frankly, and perhaps a little pathetically, there just isn't that much going on in my life. In my opinion "eight is way too much". So I'm going to do the unthinkable and bend the memeular rules a little.
GASP! I know! Stand back people, this could get messy. ;) *pow*smack*kadzook*kapow*scuffle*crunch*slap*swoosh*bang* Phew, there, cut to size. Behold... The Three is Plenty meme! 1. Dexter (starts again this week!) 2. So You Think You Can Dance (seriously addicted) 3. The Mighty Boosh (always cheers me up) 1. I finished reading the final ever Harry Potter book, finally! Now I can stop blocking my ears and "laa-laa-laaring" when it comes up in conversation. 2. I decided I would enter every single online competition I could find to try and win a holiday so that Mr You and I can have a nice honeymoon somewhere later in the year. But then I got lazy and didn't enter any. 3. We went and got thai takeaway for dinner and ate it at a picnic table overlooking the beach at dusk. ![]() 1. Beachstone Cafe (best coffee around these parts) 2. Emma's On Liberty (quaint little Lebanese place in Sydney) 3. The Lodge (in Bellingen, for good food, scenery and ambiance) ![]() 1. I wish this so-called anti-wrinkle cream I'm slathering myself in twice a day would hurry up and work already! (huh, fool) 2. I wish shoes as gorgeous as these came in my garden-gnome-foot-size 3. I wish/hope more great bands come to play up this way soon 1. Getting a new camera... once I've found a moment of sanity long enough to decide on one 2. Going to our friends wedding in April; a whole weekend where we all stay at a lovely old guesthouse together 3. Seeing my dad and his family for the first time in five years (also in April). They have been living in Northern Ireland, but are coming back for a holiday. 1. Equipoise 2. CurlyPops 3. Anna ...eight things or three things, I don't mind... depends on how exciting your lives are :) Thank-you Brenda! I hope you didn't mind me blatantly bending the rules :) Tuesday, February 03, 2009tut tut
I am ashamed of myself. Aasshh-aaamed! I cannot tell you one thing I achieved all last week. Not one. I got on the internet on Monday and next minute I looked up and it was Saturday. A whole week gone. I visited lots of blogs, but don't think I commented, I didn't download anything good, or anything. And It's not like I don't have loads of things to do. I have loads. But for some reason last week was sucked up and disappeared.
I have to buy a new camera (asap), and I can't decide which one to get. I finally made a decision, rang up to buy it, only to discover that it had been discontinued overnight. So then I spent aaaalllll week driving myself nuts reading forums, reviews, test results, etc... of two other cameras, and I'm still no closer to knowing what to do. I'm incapable of making a decision. I always have been. So what action am I going to take to avoid spending all this week repeating last week? Go buy a lotto ticket, win lots of money and buy both cameras, of course. Decision making problem solved! It's the only way. Monday, February 02, 2009small objects from afar![]() (This week's theme by The Crafty Librarian) Looking for small objects in my house I realised most of them are souvenirs from varied travels. On grand adventures souvenirs are a must, but with overloaded backpacks it's essential to make them small and light. ![]() The first "small object" souvenir here is a wood carved henna stamp. It is apparently to be used for creating henna mehndi, but I suspect in India that's all skillfully hand painted. This was given to us my Mr You's friends after they returned from a holiday to India. We've never used it as a stamp, it's far too beautiful, and instead we admire it as an ornament. ![]() The next is a crystal droplet from a chandelier in Venice. This was brought back for me by one of my dear friends when she travelled to Italy. There's a little hook that comes out the top, and you can easily imagine it hanging, as one of a thousand, from an ornate ceiling of a theatre. ![]() This last one is my own souvenir collected from Paris. The first time I visited Paris I was traveling on my own. I quickly fell under the spell Paris casts over newcomers, and I practically skipped around town the entire time I was there. Humming French tunes to myself, positively swooning with adoration for that city. I couldn't free my mind of music the whole time I was there. My souvenir, befittingly, was a tiny wind up music box thingo, that plays Edith Piaf's 'La Vie en Rose'. I adore it. It's still one of my favourite small objects.
